Whether you are purchasing a firearm from an out-of-state dealer, transferring a firearm within North Carolina, or dealing with NFA items, our experienced staff will guide you through the process.

Firearms Transfer Services

In-State Transfers (North Carolina Residents)
- Standard Firearms (Handguns, Rifles, Shotguns):
  - Transfer Fee: $25
  - Our in-state transfer service includes background checks, handling paperwork, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal laws.
Out-of-State Transfers
- Standard Firearms (Handguns, Rifles, Shotguns):
  - Transfer Fee: $35
  - Purchasing a firearm from another state? We will handle the transfer to our facility, perform the necessary background checks, and ensure the firearm is legally transferred to you.

NFA Firearms Transfer Services

NFA firearms include items such as suppressors, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), short-barreled shotguns (SBSs), and machine guns. These items are regulated by the ATF and require additional steps during the transfer process.

In-State NFA Transfers
- NFA Item (Suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, Machine Guns):
  - Transfer Fee: $100
  - Includes assistance with ATF Form 4, fingerprinting, passport photos, and notary services if required.
Out-of-State NFA Transfers
- NFA Item (Suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, Machine Guns):
  - Transfer Fee: $125
  - When purchasing NFA items from out-of-state, we coordinate the transfer to our facility, help with completing ATF Form 4, and guide you through the submission process.

Additional Services

Fingerprinting: $15 per set
Required for NFA transfers.
Passport Photos: $10
Two passport photos are typically required for NFA transfers.
Notary Services: $5
Provided on-site for any required documentation.

How the Process Works

Initiate the Transfer: Once you’ve purchased a firearm or NFA item, inform the seller that the transfer will be conducted through Knights Defense. Provide them with our contact information, and we’ll handle the rest.
Firearm Arrival: We will notify you when the firearm or NFA item arrives at our facility.
Complete Background Check:
- For Standard Firearms: You’ll complete a Form 4473 and undergo a background check. If you have a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit, no additional background check is required.
- For NFA Items: We will guide you through the completion of ATF Form 4.
Pick Up Your Item: Once all paperwork is completed and approved, you can pick up your firearm or NFA item.

Requirements for Purchasing a Firearm in North Carolina with an Out-of-State Concealed Carry Permit

Residency Requirements
- Non-North Carolina Residents: If you are not a resident of North Carolina but have a concealed carry permit from another state, you are only allowed to purchase long guns (rifles or shotguns) in North Carolina. Federal law prohibits non-residents from purchasing handguns in a state where they do not reside.
- North Carolina Residents: If you recently moved to North Carolina and have a concealed carry permit from another state, you can purchase firearms, including handguns, as long as you establish residency and meet state requirements. Your out-of-state concealed carry permit will not exempt you from North Carolina’s rules regarding handgun purchases until you obtain a North Carolina permit.
Types of Firearms You Can Purchase
- Long Guns (Rifles & Shotguns): Non-residents can purchase long guns in North Carolina provided the sale complies with the laws of both North Carolina and the buyer’s home state.
- Handguns: Only North Carolina residents can purchase handguns in North Carolina. You must provide proof of residency (e.g., state-issued ID, utility bills, lease agreement) to qualify for a handgun purchase.
Background Check Requirements
- Even if you have a concealed carry permit from another state, you will still be required to undergo a federal background check (NICS check) before purchasing a firearm in North Carolina. Federal law mandates this for all gun purchases, and having a permit from another state does not exempt you from this requirement in North Carolina.
Permits Required for Handgun Purchases
- North Carolina Residents Only: To purchase a handgun in North Carolina, you must either have a valid North Carolina Pistol Purchase Permit (PPP) or a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP). Out-of-state concealed carry permits cannot be used in place of North Carolina’s handgun purchase permit.
Age Requirements
- You must be at least 18 years old to purchase a long gun (rifle or shotgun) and 21 years old to purchase a handgun, even if you hold a concealed carry permit.

Steps to Purchase a Long Gun with an Out-of-State Concealed Carry Permit

Provide Identification
- You will need a government-issued photo ID (such as your driver’s license) to confirm your residency and age.
Complete ATF Form 4473
- This federal form is required for all firearm purchases from a licensed dealer.
Undergo a Background Check
- Even with an out-of-state concealed carry permit, a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is required before completing the purchase.

If you are moving to North Carolina and plan to buy firearms, you must follow the state’s specific rules regarding handgun purchases:

- Apply for a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit or Pistol Purchase Permit.
- Once you become a resident, your out-of-state concealed carry permit will no longer be valid for purchasing handguns in North Carolina.

Are there any firearms I cannot transfer?

We do not transfer firearms that are prohibited under state or federal law. This includes fully automatic firearms (unless they are pre-1986 machine guns and follow the NFA process), or firearms that fall under state restrictions (such as certain assault weapons).
