Legal Use of Force

LEGAL USE OF FORCE, NORTH CAROLINA

The Legal Use of Force course is a training program designed to educate law enforcement officers and military personnel on the laws and policies surrounding the use of force in the line of duty. The course covers topics such as use of force definitions, constitutional standards for the use of force, justification for using force, and use of force reporting procedures.

Participants in the course learn about the various levels of force, including non-lethal and deadly force, and when each level is appropriate. The course also covers the legal aspects of using force, such as civil liability, criminal charges, and civil rights violations. Participants learn how to properly document the use of force and how to prepare for investigations into the use of force incidents.

The Legal Use of Force course emphasizes the importance of using only the necessary force in any given situation and the need to always act within the law and departmental policies. The goal of the course is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about the use of force, to ensure that their actions are both legally and ethically defensible.
